Summertime-Braces Friendly Treats

Summertime-Braces Friendly Treats
Posted on 07/21/2017

It’s a beautiful Michigan summer and all of the staff at Dr. Gordon Niles Orthodontics hopes you are taking time out with your children and teens and making the most of it. Whether you are using your Michigan Activity Pass to tour local cultural attractions or parks in the Brighton and Howell areas, or spending more time relaxing at home, it’s a great time to make new memories. One enjoyable home activity you can do with your children is bake. We’ve gathered three of the best recipes you can make with your child and, of course, they are braces and Invisalign friendly!

Apple Cookies

apple slices

Typically, apples are a little tougher to eat with braces, as they need to be cut beforehand to prevent broken brackets. Homemaker Rachel Schultz’s solves that problem with her Apple Cookie recipe!

  • 1 apple
  • 1/4 cup peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup almonds, sliced
  • 1/4 cup walnuts, chopped
  • 1/4 cup shredded coconut
  • 1/4 cup chocolate chips

  1. Slice apple into thin rings and remove core.
  2. Spread peanut butter over one side of ring.
  3. Top with almonds, walnuts, coconut, and chocolate chips.

Pizza Cups

Need a snack to feed hungry teenage mouths? Pizza cups are a perfect late-night snack, and you’ll find the recipe below, courtesy of Recipes Just 4 You.

  • 1 pound of ground beef
  • ½ cup of finely chopped onion
  • ¼ cup of medium salsa
  • ¼ cup of ketchup
  • 1 tbsp of chili powder or taco flavoring
  • 1 tsp of salt
  • 16 flour tortillas

Topping ideas: shredded lettuce, chopped tomatoes, cheddar cheese, diced avocado and sour cream

  1. In a non stick frying pan, brown the ground beef until it is no longer pink. Add the onion and cook until soft.
  2. Stir in the salsa, ketchup and seasonings. Heat through.
  3. Cut each tortilla into a four inch square. Be sure to keep the scraps to make the stars.
  4. Microwave 8 squares at a time for 20 seconds. Press them into the bottom and sides of greased muffin cups. Set these aside.
  5. Cut the scraps into stars with a 1 inch cookie cutter. Place on a greased baking sheet.
  6. Bake at 350ºF for 6 minutes till golden brown.
  7. Fill the tortilla cups with the meat mixture. Bake for 12-15 minutes.
  8. Serve with the toppings and garnish with the stars.
