Get Ready for Back to School with Dr. Niles!kids at school

While it’s hard to believe, soon the school bells will ring to call area students back to the classroom for the start of the 2016-17 school year. If you’re a student at a local high school or college, now is a great time to schedule an appointment with our Brighton orthodontist, Dr. Niles, to improve your smile with orthodontic treatment. Just call us directly at (810) 227-1950 so we can help you schedule your first visit at a time that’s convenient for you.

It can be challenging to adjust to being back in school after being free all summer and even more so if you’ll be returning to the classroom with braces on your teeth. Below are some helpful tips and hints from Dr. Niles that can make that transition go more smoothly.

Take Along a Braces Care Kit

Because you should brush your teeth after eating lunch, we recommend taking along a “braces care kit” that includes your toothbrush, toothpaste and floss. Then after lunch you can step into a restroom to clean your teeth and braces. It is also a good idea to put some dental wax in your kit in case of an irritating bracket or poking wire.

Don’t Forget to Avoid Braces-busting Foods & Snacks

It is easy to head to the nearest vending machine to grab a candy bar when you’re hungry at break time. But remember that you need to avoid eating sticky, gooey, hard and crunchy foods as these foods can damage or break your braces. Just carry some braces-friendly snacks along with you like yogurt, applesauce, grapes or soft fruit so you always have something to snack on.

Keep All Your Scheduled Appointments

Even though your schedule will be full of all types of school-related activities and events, it is very important that you don’t skip any of your regularly scheduled orthodontic appointments with Dr. Niles. These appointments give us the opportunity to ensure your treatment is going along as planned so you must come to them all. We will send you reminders to make it easy for you to remember your upcoming appointments.

Keep Track of Your Retainers

Every school year, we have to replace lost retainers due to students wrapping them in napkins when eating lunch and then accidentally tossing them in the trash. If you are wearing a retainer, be sure to always place it in its protective case whenever it’s not in your mouth so you don’t have to pay to have another retainer made.

Have a Great School Year!

Dr. Niles and his team would like to wish all our patients heading to school the best of luck in the 2016-17 school year! We are always happy to speak with you so please don’t hesitate to call us during our regular office hours if you have any questions about your treatment.
